About the museum
The museum occupies a former livrée, a 14th-century mansion built for dignitaries of the Church. Cardinal Annibal de Ceccano occupied it from 1344; it then belonged to Pierre de Luxembourg, who is said to have died there in 1387. In the 17th century, the widow of a baron from Boucoiran bought the building and had it restored from 1663. The building has been listed as a historic monument since 1983.
The museum has been housed here since 1986. Its collections come largely from the religious establishments of Villeneuve, secularised during the Revolution. It holds the “Musée de France” label.
The museum holds, among other works, an ivory Virgin from the early 14th century and Enguerrand Quarton’s “Couronnement de la Vierge”, painted in 1453–1454 for a Carthusian chapel. There are also 17th-century paintings by artists such as Philippe de Champaigne, Nicolas Mignard and Reynaud Levieux, and a mid-17th-century Dutch cabinet.
