About the museum
The Néris-les-Bains museum opened in 1995 in the Maison du Patrimoine, a 15th-century noble house behind the Romanesque church, near the Merovingian necropolis. The old building was fitted out in a modern way to house the collections.
The objects come from excavations carried out in the commune since the 19th century and from the private collections of local scholars. The ancient town of Néris is a rich archaeological site, and the reception room shows its contrasting aspects: an official town built on the Roman model, with large inscriptions and capitals from the baths, and craft quarters where housing kept a Celtic tradition.
The route evokes everyday life through ceramics (mortars, urns, cooking pots, dishes, jugs), glass feeding bottles, oil lamps, styli and jewellery. Worship is illustrated by figurines of deities, a bas-relief of the Gaulish goddess Epona and statues of Taranis and Cernunnos. Temporary painting exhibitions complement the permanent collections.
