About the museum
The Musée Stendhal opened in 2012 as a network of sites linked to the writer Henri Beyle, known as Stendhal (1783–1842), who was born in Grenoble. The main public site is the Appartement Gagnon, at 20 Grande-Rue, which was renovated for the occasion. The writer's birthplace on rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau now houses administrative and educational offices and is not open to the public.
The Stendhal collections are kept at the Bibliothèque d'étude et du patrimoine in Grenoble. Their origins go back to 1861, when the widow of Louis Crozet gave the municipal library sixty volumes of manuscripts. The holdings now comprise nearly 40,000 manuscript pages, almost all of the known autograph manuscripts, along with about 1,000 prints and 7,000 printed volumes, including editions in foreign languages and studies of the writer.
The museum also offers a city route: a free booklet, available at reception, describes a historic itinerary through central Grenoble, marked by a dozen bilingual French–English plaques.
