About the museum
The Musée sundgauvien was founded in 1877 by Gustave Kubler, from a collection started in 1874 with Celtic axes. Since 1952 it has been housed in the former bailiff’s house (maison du bailli) of Altkirch, a 16th-century building near the town hall, which the town bought to display its collections. The residence of the Habsburg bailiff, who administered justice and kept watch over the town, the building has a spiral staircase in a tower, diamond-paned windows, a roof of glazed tiles and a weathervane dated 1472. It has been a listed historic monument since 1986.
The museum presents the history, daily life and customs of southern Alsace, in particular the Sundgau. The collections include minerals, fossils and prehistoric objects, Gallo-Roman and Merovingian finds, as well as furniture, faience stoves, tableware, costumes, linen and headdresses.
The fine arts section focuses on the painter Jean-Jacques Henner, born in Bernwiller in 1829, with portraits and a self-portrait. It also shows works by regional artists such as Léon Lehmann and Félix Voulot, as well as a sculpture by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
