About the museum
The Musée des Arts décoratifs is on the first floor of the Palais Rohan, the former residence of the prince-bishops of Strasbourg, built from 1732 to 1742 by Robert de Cotte, first architect to the king. It occupies the apartments of the Rohan cardinals as well as the former stables and old courtrooms.
The museum grew out of the Hohenlohe Museum, founded in 1890 by Wilhelm von Bode and moved to the Palais Rohan in 1898. The apartments have been restored to a state close to their appearance before the bombardments of 1870 and 1944: stucco, frescoes, trompe-l’œil, tapestries, chandeliers, chinoiserie, rococo paintings and furniture, with a few Premier Empire rooms.
The decorative arts collections trace the development of Strasbourg craftsmanship from 1681 to 1870, notably furniture, ceramics, clockmaking and silverware. They include an important group of faience from the Hannong manufactory and pieces from Niderviller, as well as works by the silversmith families Kirstein and Imlin. The museum also presents a selection of mechanical toys from the Tomi Ungerer donation.
