About the museum
The Musée Vauban has been housed since 1957 on the ground floor of the Porte de Belfort, one of the gates of Neuf-Brisach. The town was built after the Treaty of Ryswick of 1697, by which France lost Brisach, to plans by Vauban under Louis XIV. The pink sandstone used for the works came from the Vosges and was transported by canal; the fortifications were completed in 1702 and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
The museum occupies two rooms. The first shows how Vauban designed and built the town, with plans, construction documents and a reproduction of an 18th-century relief model. The second traces the history of Neuf-Brisach up to the Second World War, including the siege of 1870, and presents on screens the other towns of the Vauban network. The venue is small: it can hold 50 visitors at a time.
