About the museum
The Musée de l’instrumentation optique in Biesheim is housed in the basement of the Capitole, the building that also houses the Gallo-Roman museum. It displayed about 450 objects over more than 300 m², tracing the development of optics over several centuries in fields as varied as microscopy, astronomy, navigation, surveying and medicine, up to the laser and holography.
The route showed the race to perfect instruments: microscopes, astronomical telescopes, sextants, graphometers, theodolites, binoculars and instruments for treating eye diseases. About ten holograms welcomed visitors and showed how light can be used to manipulate the image.
The museum also highlighted the technical heritage of the Haut-Rhin through the work of Alsatian scholars and precision mechanics who contributed to optics and precision engineering, such as Jecker, Kalt, Thomas, Silbermann and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate Alfred Kastler. In November 2021 the municipality announced that the museum was temporarily closed; its page was subsequently removed from the municipality’s website, and no reopening has been announced.
