About the museum
The museum is located in Lit-et-Mixe, in the Landes, and is one of the cultural venues of the commune. Opened in 1987 under the name “Musée vieilles Landes”, it preserves the heritage of the Marensin, a former province south of the Courant de Contis.
The route tells the story of the region’s inhabitants in the 19th and 20th centuries: the shepherds who moved about on stilts, work in the fields, the family gathered in the kitchen, the planting of pine trees and resin tapping, as well as many trades that have since disappeared. Old tools, machines and utensils illustrate this everyday life, and video sessions present resin tapping, forest work and pinasse fishing.
The barn houses a monumental pinasse and several reconstructed areas, such as the apiary, the pig slaughter (tuaille) or the Uza forges.
