About the museum

Born in 1890 in Belarus, Ossip Zadkine settled in Paris in 1909 and became a French citizen in 1921. He is counted among the most important sculptors of the 20th century.

In 1934, after reading an advertisement, he visited a property in Les Arques, in the Quercy region, with his wife, the painter Valentine Prax. The place captivated them: the purchase gave them, for the first time, land of their own. Zadkine remained attached to the region for the rest of his life and drew inspiration from it for several of his major works.

The museum is located in the upper part of the village, opposite the church. It presents many of the sculptor’s works, in particular large wooden sculptures and powerful bronzes. Some sculptures are displayed outdoors in the village. The Romanesque church of Les Arques houses two important works, “Le Christ” and “La Pietà”, which gain further power in this setting.
