About the museum
The museum is housed in Joachim Murat's birthplace, a former family inn in Labastide-Murat. Born in 1767 in the village then called Labastide-Fortunière, Murat became a Marshal of the Empire, Napoleon's brother-in-law and King of Naples. The house was given to the Lot département by the descendants of the Murat counts, the branch of the marshal's brother.
A museum was created in the birthplace in 1959. It grew through gifts from the family and acquisitions by the Friends of the Musée Murat association. The first floor keeps the typical interior of an inn from the late 18th and 19th centuries, with its fireplace, stone sink and everyday objects.
Upstairs, the collections bring together historic objects belonging to the King of Naples, including elements of the uniform worn at Eylau, along with paintings, prints, documents and photographs of his career. The museum also displays a portrait of Antoinette Murat, Joachim Murat's niece.
