About the museum

Ossip Zadkine, a sculptor of Russian origin who had lived in Paris since 1910, moved in 1928 into a small house with a studio and garden on rue d’Assas in Montparnasse. In the 1960s, together with his wife, the painter Valentine Prax, he planned to bequeath his works and studio to the City of Paris to create a museum. Zadkine died in 1967; Valentine Prax carried out the project in 1978 and left all her possessions to the city on her death in 1981.

The Musée Zadkine opened on April 19, 1982. It holds sculptures in wood, stone, plaster, clay and bronze, from his early work and cubist period to the major works of his maturity, as well as an important collection of drawings and archives and works by Valentine Prax. The garden, designed by landscape architect Gilles Clément, displays sculptures inspired by trees and the forest.

The museum was renovated in 2012 to be accessible to all and presents its collections in the spirit of an artist’s studio. It is one of the fourteen museums of the City of Paris run by the public institution Paris Musées. The display is renewed regularly; the next one includes recent acquisitions, notably two Art Deco reliefs designed for a Parisian hotel that no longer exists.
