About the museum
In the 1930s the Maginot Line was extended northwards, notably into the Val de Sambre. The small La Salmagne infantry fortress work, at Vieux-Reng, is a witness to this little-known period. It is part of the fortified sector of Maubeuge.
The work comprises two two-storey combat blocks, linked 30 metres underground by a 150-metre passage leading to the barracks. Outside, remains of an older fort of the Séré de Rivières type can still be seen. La Salmagne is one of the few places where Séré de Rivières and Maginot fortifications can be seen on the same site.
The work can be visited in full. A volunteer association based in Jeumont guides visitors through it on open days.
