About the museum
The Salle des Traditions was created in 1984 in the Célestins district of Paris, which houses the Garde Républicaine barracks. It occupies former stables and traces the history of this gendarmerie unit from its origins in 1802 to the present day.
The collections comprise about 1,500 items: weapons, uniforms, equipment, musical instruments, models and documents. They cover infantry, cavalry and musical formations. One area is devoted to Chef d’escadron Jean Vérines, who was executed by the Germans for his role in the Resistance.
The site lies within a barracks that is still in use. Visits are therefore limited to specific time slots: on weekdays by appointment, and freely during exceptional openings such as the European Heritage Days.
