About the museum
The villa was built in the 1860s by the architect Clément Parent as a family home, during the first phase of development of the seaside resort of Cabourg. Its brick façade, decorated with a diamond-lattice pattern, sets it apart from the Belle Époque buildings around it, most of which are more recent.
Over the course of changes of use, several wings were added. Before becoming a museum, it housed the Bruno Coquatrix cultural center. The site is now run as part of a municipal project and presents itself as an innovative museum.
The project is devoted to the heritage of the Côte fleurie, to Marcel Proust’s imaginary world, and to the cultures of the Belle Époque, the period between two centuries and two wars when Paris was the center of winter life and the Normandy resorts welcomed visitors in summer. Proust serves as the visitor’s guide. The route combines artworks, furniture, films, photographs, sounds and costumes, with digital mediation that lets visitors listen, read and watch room by room.
The works are lent by cultural institutions and private collectors, most often for one or several seasons. The 2026 season, titled “Marcel Proust & les avant-gardes,” brings together more than 350 works and objects in an immersive staging.
