About the museum

Haus Leck in Grebenstein was built in 1431 as a Diemel-Saxon half-timbered house and is among the oldest buildings in the town and the region. Through the large gate with a portal from 1606, harvest wagons once drove into the high central hall (Diele). As early as 1936 there were plans to use it as a museum; in 1966 the Hessian Heimatbund set up a museum here, which had to close again after a few years.

In 1980 the town of Grebenstein took over the house, in 1981 it appointed a volunteer museum director, and in 1984 the Ackerbürgermuseum reopened. The friends' association Förderkreis Ackerbürgermuseum Grebenstein e. V., founded in 1981, supports the town in running it.

On the first floor, the former stables display agricultural implements, a shoemaker's workshop (in the house since 1862), and a kitchen with an open hearth along with living and sleeping rooms. On the third floor are testimonies to crafts and guilds; in the loft are tools for processing flax, spinning and weaving, as well as a doll's house from around 1880 and a large collection of folk wall decorations. Across the street, the "Alte Meierei", a former landgrave's estate, houses a permanent exhibition on town history.
