About the museum

The painter and art teacher Adolf Hölzel, a pioneer of modernism and a teacher at the Stuttgart Academy from 1906 to 1918, lived and worked in this house on Ahornstraße in Degerloch from 1919 until his death in 1934.

In 2005, his granddaughter Doris Dieckmann-Hölzel founded the non-profit Adolf Hölzel Foundation. After her death in 2010, his artistic estate and the building passed to the foundation, which has since used the house as a venue for exhibitions, lectures and research on Hölzel.

Between 2020 and 2022 the building was renovated for around €1.8 million, financed half by the City of Stuttgart and half by the foundation with donors and supporters. The original layout of the rooms was restored, an extension for an art school was added, and the entrance was relocated to provide barrier-free access. The house has been regularly open to the public since it reopened in September 2022.

In the living and studio rooms, some of them furnished with original furniture, the foundation shows works from all of Hölzel's creative periods, complemented by changing presentations, for example on his students. In 2025, the Kauffmann Portfolio, a group of 105 graphic works, was added. A library and a digital image database are available for in-depth study.
