Museum Hegel-Haus
Birthplace of philosopher G. W. F. Hegel in downtown Stuttgart, with a free exhibition on his life and thought, a media room, and an escape room.
About the museum
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born in 1770 in this townhouse on Eberhardstraße, whose fabric dates back to the 16th century. The future philosopher spent his early childhood here; in total he lived in Stuttgart for about 18 years before leaving to study in Tübingen.
Since 1991 the City of Stuttgart has used the building as a museum on Hegel's life and work. After closing in 2019 for remodeling and a new concept, the house reopened just in time for the philosopher's 250th birthday on August 27, 2020, with a completely redesigned permanent exhibition.
Today the museum belongs to the family of museums of the Stadtmuseum Stuttgart (StadtPalais). Across three floors, the exhibition combines a multimedia introduction on the first floor with original objects, interactive stations, and a small library on the upper floors; texts are available in German, English, and Chinese. With workshops, philosophy cafés, the philosüd festival, and an escape room on Hegel's Phenomenology, the museum aims to make philosophical thinking accessible to newcomers as well.
