Agnes-Miegel-Haus
Former home of the East Prussian poet Agnes Miegel in Bad Nenndorf with her living room and study preserved in their original state.
About the museum
Writer Agnes Miegel, born in Königsberg in 1879, fled East Prussia in February 1945, spent some time in the Danish refugee camp at Oksbøl and came to the Schaumburger Land at the end of 1946. From 1953 until her death in 1964 she lived in this house in Bad Nenndorf, for which the municipality had granted her a lifelong right of residence; she also became an honorary citizen. The house quickly became a meeting place for friends, readers and expellees, and Miegel wrote numerous poems and stories here.
Five years after her death, friends founded the Agnes Miegel Society in 1969, which acquired the house in 1971 with the support of the Landsmannschaft Ostpreußen (East Prussian expellees' association) and restored it. On the tenth anniversary of her death, October 26, 1974, four memorial rooms on the first floor were opened to the public. The living room and study have been left as the poet left them; other rooms show pictures, photographs, books, documents and personal belongings from her life.
The house is still run by the society and maintained through membership fees and donations. Agnes Miegel is controversial because of her open support for National Socialism; streets and schools named after her have been renamed in many places, while the privately owned house kept its name.
