About the museum
The museum recalls the time when miners came to Lindhorst and the farming village became an industrial town. In 1995 Hans Winter, Gunter Ludewig and Reinhard Falke founded the "Schaumburger Bergbaumuseum", which opened in Vornhagen in 1996. Since August 27, 2006 it has been housed at Hof Gümmer in the center of Lindhorst, together with its own farm café.
The half-timbered building presents exhibits across four levels, including a replica mine adit with mine car and shaker chute, original miners' tools and part of a pithead bathhouse (Waschkaue) from Obernkirchen. The museum is run by the Kultur- und Förderverein Schaumburger Bergbau e. V.
By 2021 the house had been converted into a computer-controlled museum: some 1,500 documents, texts and pictures and 85 historical films were digitized, and contemporary witnesses report in filmed contributions. Since 2024 there has been a virtual 360° tour, and in 2025 audio playback for texts was added. The themed areas range from village and rural life from 1896 to 1960 through mining in Schaumburg and the steam brickworks, to miners' festivals and costumes of the 1960s.
