About the museum

Albrecht Dürer bought the stately half-timbered house at the Tiergärtnertor gate below the Imperial Castle in 1509, the same year he was elected to the Outer Council of the Free Imperial City. Until his death in 1528 he lived and worked here with his wife Agnes, his mother and journeymen, apprentices and servants. Today the house is considered the only Renaissance artist's house north of the Alps to survive largely in its original state.

The memory of its famous resident stayed alive: in 1826 the building passed into the ownership of the City of Nuremberg, and at the Dürer anniversary in 1828 it became a memorial – probably one of the very first artists' memorials of the modern era. The Albrecht-Dürer-Haus-Stiftung, founded in 1871, restored the then dilapidated house and opened it to a wide public as a museum. Around 1880 the living rooms on the second floor were furnished in historicist style.

The house largely survived the destruction of the old town in 1945 and reopened as early as 1949. For Dürer's 500th birthday in 1971, a modern exhibition annex was added. Since 2010 the museum has been redesigned in terms of content: with the media station “Der digitale Dürer”, the Grafisches Kabinett for changing exhibitions from the city's graphic art collection, and the Dürer-Saal, opened in 2012, with historical copies of his paintings. Old printing and painting techniques are regularly demonstrated in the workshop; on costumed tours, “Agnes Dürer” talks about everyday life in the household.
