About the museum

The house on Burgstraße was built between 1591 and 1596 as a residence and place of business for Philipp van Oyrl, a merchant from the Netherlands; its design is attributed to Jakob Wolff the Elder. It is the only large late Renaissance merchant's house to have survived in Nuremberg. From 1668 the patrician Christoph Jakob Behaim had the rooms remodeled into a Baroque residential palace, as the magnificent stucco ceilings still attest today.

In the 18th and 19th centuries the house was home to the Homann map publishing house (Homännische Landkartenoffizin), whose copperplate maps were distributed throughout Europe. The property owes its name to Georg Christoph Franz Fembo, who acquired it in the early 19th century. In 1928 it passed into municipal ownership. The main building survived World War II almost undamaged; the other parts of the complex were rebuilt.

The Fembo-Haus has served as the city museum since 1953. After extensive renovation and a new concept, it reopened in 2000. In 2021 the exhibition trail "Masel tov!" on Jewish life in Nuremberg was added. Since February 2024 the redesigned permanent exhibition has occupied the fourth and fifth floors – featuring, among other things, a camera flight over the large model of the old town, augmented reality, and a smartphone media guide. Since July 2024 a presentation on the second floor has recalled the former Städtische Galerie (municipal gallery) of the Weimar era.
