About the museum

The Altenburg Brewery was founded in 1871 as a joint-stock brewery. Its complex of buildings in the industrial style of historicism, preserved to this day, is a listed monument; the brewhouse of 1912/13, planned according to a concept by engineer Theodor Ganzenmüller, shows influences of Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque. The historic brewing equipment with five copper brewing vessels is preserved there.

After World War II, the brewery became a state-owned enterprise in 1948 and was attached to the Leipzig beverage combine in 1968. After 1990, production initially declined sharply before new owners continued operations. Today the family-owned company, with more than 50 employees, brews again at the historic site and also uses the old rooms for celebrations, conferences and concerts.

The brewery museum within the complex conveys the history of beer and regional brewing, explains how beer is made and shows how the Altenburg Brewery has changed over the decades. It can be visited by prior appointment, often combined with a brewery tour and a tasting.
