About the museum

The museum was founded in 1989, a few weeks before the peaceful revolution in the GDR, initially as a farm museum, and for a long time afterward was called Volkskundemuseum Wyhra (Wyhra Folklore Museum). It is located on a four-sided farmstead in Wyhra, a district of Borna, whose half-timbered buildings mostly date from the 18th century: the residence is dated to 1743, the stable and barn followed in the 1750s, and the side building around 1800. The historic courtyard paving is also a protected monument. From 1852 the estate belonged to the Flemming family, which is why it is also known as the Flemming-Hof.

After German reunification, the farmstead was thoroughly renovated in 1990/91, and further work followed in the late 1990s. The dovecote and coach house come from the village of Heuersdorf, which had to make way for lignite open-pit mining; they were dismantled there and rebuilt in Wyhra.

In 2019, the city of Borna took over sponsorship from the district of Leipzig. With funding from the EU LEADER program, a new concept was developed, and in 2021 the house reopened as Geschichtenhof Wyhra (Story Farm Wyhra). The permanent exhibition "Hofgeschichten" (Farm Stories) transports visitors to a festive day around 1900 on which the farm residents are preparing for the baptism of the youngest son. Invented but historically grounded characters tell of work, everyday life and social change at listening stations; many objects may be touched and tried out. Also available are a museum app, a discovery barn for events and overnight stays in a shepherd's wagon.
