About the museum
Anna Katharina Emmerick was born in 1774 in Flamschen near Coesfeld, entered the Augustinian convent Agnetenberg in Dülmen in 1803 and, after its dissolution, lived in various houses in the town until her death in 1824. From 1812 she bore the stigmata, which church and state commissions investigated; the poet Clemens Brentano wrote down her visions over a period of years. Her grave in the Dülmen cemetery quickly became a destination for pilgrims.
The Holy Cross Church (Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche) was built in 1936–1938 to designs by Dominikus Böhm as a parish church and at the same time as a future burial and pilgrimage church for Emmerick. After severe war damage in 1945 it was rebuilt by 1953. In 1975 Emmerick's remains were transferred from the neighbouring cemetery to the crypt.
After her beatification by Pope John Paul II in 2004, the grave was redesigned and the memorial was set up beneath the crypt. Its centrepiece is the sickroom from the house of the Limberg inn, in which Emmerick lived for several years: it was removed in 1899 before the house was demolished and preserved together with its furnishings. In addition there is an extensive collection of personal belongings, mementos and writings by and about the mystic. Volunteers of the Emmerick-Bund look after the memorial, offer guided tours and accompany pilgrimage groups.
