About the museum
The building on Bahnhofsallee was constructed in 1870 as a school with a teacher's apartment. As the number of pupils grew, the building was used differently; later a kindergarten moved in, and parts were used by the fire brigade. From 1974, the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Lette needed most of the rooms to set up a local history museum; a small part remained as a branch of the town administration.
Over the decades, the collections grew considerably. For two years, numerous volunteers planned and rebuilt the museum and developed a new concept, supported by professional museum design. On September 13, 2026, the house reopened with a new, theme-focused, and partly digital exhibition. Instead of a mass of objects, the focus is now on a clear selection and an easy-to-follow presentation.
The exhibition is devoted to crafts, home economics, agriculture, and school, fitting for the former school building, and it also invites children to explore. One area belongs to the association Denkmal Barackenlager Lette, which commemorates, with the permanent exhibition "Spuren der Vertreibung" (Traces of Expulsion), the best-preserved barracks camp for expellees in North Rhine-Westphalia. The house also has room for a modern local heritage archive with an extensive newspaper archive.
