About the museum

The Augustinermuseum occupies the buildings of a monastery of the Augustinian Hermits that stood in Freiburg's old town from the late 13th century. After the monastery was dissolved, the church and the monastic buildings were used for purposes including a theater and a school.

In 1923 the municipal museum of art and cultural history moved into the converted rooms. Its first director, Werner Noack, deliberately built up the collection with works from the Upper Rhine region and made the museum one of the most important art collections in the region.

From 2006 onward, the complex was thoroughly renovated and expanded in three phases to plans by the architect Christoph Mäckler. In 2010 the converted monastery church opened as an impressive sculpture hall, followed in 2016 by the new Haus der Graphischen Sammlung (house of the prints and drawings collection) on Salzstraße. Renovation of the cloister, convent building and vaulted cellars was delayed, among other things, by dry rot damage; on February 28, 2026, the museum fully reopened after around two decades of construction.

The collection ranges from medieval sculpture, stained glass and original figures from the Freiburg Minster through panel paintings by Matthias Grünewald, Hans Baldung Grien and Lucas Cranach to Baroque art and 19th-century painting, for example by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, Anselm Feuerbach and Hans Thoma. It also includes folk art, decorative arts and a large collection of prints and drawings.
