About the museum

The museum was founded by Freiburg master stucco plasterer and restorer Hans Rich, who opened it on August 1, 1979, alongside his business and without public funding. It is considered the first stucco museum in Germany and remains attached to the Werkstätte für Stuck, Baukunst und Denkmalpflege Hans Rich KG in the Industriegebiet Nord industrial area.

Over decades, Rich collected plaster models, molds, and architectural ornaments, many of them from old buildings that were being remodeled or gutted. The collection, covering about 120 square meters, includes cornices, rosettes, corbels, columns, capitals, busts, reliefs, and overdoors, complemented by tools, drawings, and technical literature. Many pieces come from the production of the Freiburg firm Brenzinger & Cie., whose pattern book is also on display. Some models document lost Freiburg architectural ornament, such as plaster models for the Lutherkirche, which was destroyed in World War II.

The museum serves as a teaching collection for apprentices in the stucco trade and as a repository of forms for restoration work in historic preservation. Visits are possible by prior appointment, and admission is free.
