About the museum
The Heimathaus of the Banat Swabians in Würzburg-Heidingsfeld opened in 1987 as a museum of customs and traditional costume dolls. Banat women recreated the festive and working costumes of their home villages in miniature, while men restored the house and set it up. The City of Würzburg, the Government of Lower Franconia, and the Federal Ministry of the Interior supported the project. Today the Würzburg district branch of the Landsmannschaft der Banater Schwaben (Banat Swabian association) runs the house.
The museum is housed in a listed garden villa from 1899 next to the Heidingsfeld town wall and the Salmannsturm tower. It is not a Banat house but a Lower Franconian building that has become a place of encounter through its use.
The collection includes over one hundred costume doll pairs, original costumes, customs-related items, tools, furniture, household goods, and old photographs. A formal parlor, a kitchen, and a ceramics collection offer an overview of the folk culture, history, and economic achievements of the Banat Swabians.
