About the museum
The Würzburg Cathedral Treasury brings together works of art from more than ten centuries. For a long time it was believed that the treasures had been lost for good as a result of the Second World War; however, a painstaking search and the restoration of supposed losses have brought many pieces back.
Until 2015 the treasury was housed in the Marmelsteiner Hof; since then it has been presented in Würzburg Cathedral. On 170 square meters, 182 objects are on display, from a tiny relic fragment to a massive gravestone slab.
The focus is on the relics, to which a large area right at the entrance is devoted. In addition there are episcopal insignia, liturgical vessels, vestments and mitres: one example from around 1725–1750 bears classic floral motifs, while the mitre of Bishop Josef Stangl from the early 1970s shows the fanciful patterns of its time.
