About the museum

The Schniederlihof was built in 1593 and extensively enlarged in 1766. It was then farmed almost unchanged until 1966. When the last farmer died unexpectedly and without children, the farm passed to the then municipality of Hofsgrund, which recognized its historical value. The building opened as a museum in 1972; since 1974 Hofsgrund has belonged to Oberried. The farm has borne its name since the early 19th century, after an owner named Schneider, who was nicknamed "Schniederli" because of his small stature.

The house, at about 1050 meters above sea level, is a typical Schauinsland Black Forest house. People and livestock lived under one roof, which on the weather side reaches down to the ground as a hipped roof. The ridge runs parallel to the slope, so that hay could be driven into the loft from the hillside and processed from above; the entrance is on the east side. Snow on the roof also served as extra insulation during the long winter.

Largely in its original state, the museum shows how mountain farmers once lived and worked here, in the kitchen, the good parlor with the Herrgottswinkel (religious corner) and on the loft. The farm lies in a nature reserve and can only be reached on foot; a small kiosk serves visitors during opening hours.
