About the museum
Ore was already being dug in the Münstertal in the 10th century; in 1028 King Conrad II granted the Bishop of Basel silver mines in the Breisgau. After the Thirty Years’ War the era of silver mining ended. At the beginning of the 18th century St. Trudpert Abbey resumed work at the mine, now mainly to extract lead, until operations ceased in 1864.
In 1942 the search for fluorspar began: a blind shaft was sunk about 180 metres and several levels were driven. Because the yield remained too low, mining finally ended in 1958.
In 1970 the municipality of Münstertal opened the Teufelsgrund as the first show mine in the Black Forest; since 1972 a side adit has also been used as a healing adit for people with respiratory diseases. Since 2009 the Burgert family has run the mine as tenants, supported by the Bergbaufreunde Münstertal association founded in 2013. With many hours of voluntary work, the tracks in the adit were removed and the paths levelled, so that the mine can today be walked at ground level and without steps.
