About the museum

The Baumannsche Mühle was built in 1799 on the banks of the Echaz and served as a grain mill for many years; from 1941 its water wheel generated electricity until operations ended in 1963. In 1988 the listed building was restored and two museums were set up inside. The drive system still produces electricity today, and a fish ladder runs through the wheel chamber in the annex.

For the mill museum, the equipment of the since-demolished Haydtsche Mühle, which had operated until the late 1970s, was installed; the water wheel comes from a former gypsum mill. Across four floors, visitors can follow the millstones, bucket elevators and plansifters, supplemented by information on grain milling and the use of water power.

In the former living quarters, the Schwäbischer Albverein (Swabian Jura Association) has displayed its costume collection since its centenary in 1988. Around 180 pieces on three floors document rural clothing in old Württemberg and neighboring regions between about 1750 and 1900 – from everyday workwear to mourning attire – complemented by a spinning room showing how the textiles were made.

Since 2011 the building has also served as an information center for the Schwäbische Alb Biosphere Reserve; an interactive map and an audio station with dialogues in Swabian dialect were added at that time. Both museums are run by volunteer members of the Pfullingen chapter of the Albverein with support from the town.
