About the museum

The Baumann grain mill in Pfullingen was built in 1799. Since 1988, the residential part of the building has housed the Württemberg Costume Museum (Württembergisches Trachtenmuseum), which shows the costume collection of the Swabian Alb Association. In the part of the mill facing the Echaz, the technical equipment of the Haydt mill, which was in operation until the late 1970s, was also installed.

The costume museum presents rural clothing from the 18th to 20th century from the former Kingdom of Württemberg and neighboring areas. It is not only about festive forms and colors, but about the history of rural clothing as a whole, including regulations and customs. Equipment and pictures from the spinning room (Spinnstube) show how fabrics were made, from spinning to ribbon weaving.

In the mill museum, grinding stones (Mahlgänge), bucket elevators (Becherwerke) and plansifters (Plansichter) can be studied across four floors; the mill is still operational. Volunteers from the Pfullingen local group of the Swabian Alb Association look after both museums with support from the town. The building also serves as an information center for the Biosphärengebiet Schwäbische Alb on the regional history of costume.
