About the museum

The Begas Haus in Heinsberg's old town grew out of the former district museum. After about three years of renovation, it opened on March 12, 2014 with a new name and a new focus. For this, the historic main building from the 16th to 18th centuries was extended by the neighboring Haus Lennartz and connected by a glass stairwell with an elevator.

The museum is named after the Begas family of artists. Its patriarch Carl Joseph Begas (1794–1854) came from Heinsberg, taught as a professor at the Berlin Academy and became a Prussian court painter; his four sons also became painters or sculptors. The museum holds the most extensive collection nationwide of paintings, sculptures and graphic works from four generations of this family, ranging from Romanticism to the Imperial era.

The second permanent exhibition is devoted to the regional history of the Rhine-Meuse area over more than a millennium, with archaeological finds, documents, Christian sacred art and furniture from the Middle Ages to the Biedermeier period. A large part of the objects comes from the museum's own holdings. In addition there are temporary exhibitions, workshops for children and adults, and a digital museum guide.
