About the museum
The Roerstreekmuseum belongs to the Heemkundevereniging Roerstreek (HVR), which was founded in 1967 and has been based at Kerkplein 10 in Sint Odiliënberg since 1974. The building, a former school, stands at the foot of the historic basilica of Saints Wiro, Plechelmus and Otgerus directly on the Roer. It has belonged to the association since 1981, and a new section was added in 1982. The museum has been officially certified since 2009.
The association's work revolves around the villages of the Roerstreek: Herkenbosch, Herten, Linne, Melick, Montfort, Sint Odiliënberg, Posterholt and Vlodrop. The archaeology working group stood at the beginning of the association's founding; in earlier years the association excavated itself and found a Roman burial ground as well as burial grounds from the Urnfield period and the Merovingian period. The discovery of a Roman coin hoard during the redesign of the Vlootbeek is thanks to a member of the association. Since the Malta Convention, the association is no longer allowed to excavate on its own and instead takes part in investigations in the region.
The permanent exhibition shows, in numerous display cases, finds from the Roerstreek from the Palaeolithic to modern times, resulting from excavations, donations, bequests and loans. In addition there are changing exhibitions on a regional theme, often with loans from other museums or private individuals. The association also owns a great many photographs, several films, an extensive library and around 370,000 memorial cards. It has roughly 600 members, about 10 percent of whom volunteer, and publishes a yearbook every year; the 57th edition appeared most recently.
