Bergarbeiterwohnmuseum

Furnished colliery house in Lünen-Brambauer showing the housing and daily life of a miner's family in the Ruhr region around 1930, from the cellar to the roof.

Opening hoursAdmission from €1.50

About the museum

The museum is located in the Neue Kolonie of the former Minister Achenbach colliery in the Brambauer district of Lünen. It came into being in 1994, when the entire colliery housing estate was comprehensively renovated. One half of a semi-detached house built in 1904/05 was deliberately left in its old condition and became the museum.

The two apartments are furnished from the cellar to the roof as a miner's family lived around 1930. For this, the house was restored to its condition at that time: exposed wiring, whitewashed walls with painted borders, red-painted floorboards, wooden windows and an outhouse. The kitchen, living room, bedroom and children's room as well as the pantry convey the daily life of the period.

The basic furnishings were supplied by an antiques dealer from the town; later, neighbors and visitors added to the collection with kitchen and craft tools, furniture, decoration and photos. The house is run by volunteers of the Förderverein Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum, supported by the Vivawest Stiftung. The museum is also a wedding venue of the Lünen registry office and has served several times as a film location.
