About the museum
The Heimatverein Waltrop was founded on 18 June 1935 by fourteen citizens to cultivate local history, customs and the Low German language. Since the 1920s, friends of local history had already been gathering pictures, documents and museum pieces.
Under longtime association chairman Norbert Frey, the museum moved into the former Riphaushof and opened there in 1996. The building is next to the open-air pool on Riphausstraße; in the courtyard stands the hall of the municipal Parkfest operation.
The exhibition rooms display many relics from earlier times, while in the workshop new finds are restored for exhibitions. The photo collection, which documents the town's transformation, is regarded as a special treasure. An audio guide leads through the tour with spoken and written texts. The building also serves as the association's headquarters and archive.
