About the museum
Friedrichssegen, today a district of Lahnstein in the Lahn valley, was a mining village for generations. The mine of the same name produced silver, lead and zinc ores; traces of the installations and spoil heaps can still be seen in the valley, as can the old miners' cemetery.
Since 1994, the Grube Friedrichssegen working group has been researching the history of the village. Its members collected old photographs and newspaper reports from residents and evaluated archives in Lahnstein, Koblenz and Wiesbaden. This work led to the founding of the mining museum in 2000, which is now run by the town of Lahnstein and looked after by volunteers.
On display are historic photographs of the mine from the years around 1905 to 1910 and a model of the valley, more than seven metres long, with buildings and works installations around 1900. More than 40 mineral specimens from Friedrichssegen tunnels, including green crystals known as "Emser Tönnchen", come in part from the collection of the descendants of the last mine director, Karl Leuschner. The museum is open one Sunday a month in the summer half-year and by arrangement; admission is free.
