This exhibition focuses on works by modern artists who were inspired by Beethoven's music.
About the museum
The house on Wambachstraße in the Koblenz district of Ehrenbreitstein dates back in its core to the 17th century. In 1746 Maria Magdalena Keverich was born here, the daughter of a head court cook to the Electorate of Trier and later the mother of Ludwig van Beethoven. Along with the composer's birthplace in Bonn, it is one of the last surviving buildings in the German-speaking world closely linked to the Beethoven family history.
The building served as a residence until well into the 20th century. In 1960 the City of Koblenz acquired it at the suggestion of the Deinhard foundation in order to set up a memorial, which opened in 1975 after initial alterations. In the mid-1980s the house was extensively renovated and connected to a modernized rear building. Since 2001 the Mittelrhein-Museum Koblenz has been in charge of the exhibitions; the house is now a branch of this municipal museum and lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
The permanent exhibition tells of the Keverich family, Beethoven's youth in Bonn, his friendships and his years in Vienna, as well as of Ehrenbreitstein as the former residence of the Electors of Trier. Other rooms are devoted to figures associated with the town, such as Sophie von La Roche and Clemens Brentano, and display Biedermeier furniture. Annually changing special exhibitions explore Beethoven's influence on art and music, and the friends' association Förderer Mutter-Beethoven-Haus e. V. (founded in 2011) also organizes concerts.
