About the museum
The Forest Museum and Forest School Grunewald are among the oldest green learning venues in Berlin. As early as 1973, the Berlin branch of the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SDW, German Forest Protection Association) set up a so-called Waldlehrschau (forest teaching exhibition) in Jagdschloss Grunewald (hunting lodge); over the following years it developed into today's institution.
The Forest Museum is located in the eastern Grunewald, on the grounds of a former tree nursery. The residential and administration building, erected in 1914 with a small horse stable, also houses the Forest School. The exhibition presents the forest habitat through taxidermied animals, diagrams and exhibits, and invites visitors to take part with sensory stations, touch boxes, scent and birdsong puzzles, and identification tasks on cones, bark and seeds. In the adjoining forest garden there are adventure and play stations and a barefoot trail.
The Forest School offers forest experience days mainly for primary school classes and daycare groups (Kita); on weekends there are guided hikes (including night hikes), participatory activities and excursions, as well as forest holiday weeks for pupils. The work is financially supported by the Berliner Forsten (Berlin state forestry).
