Betten- und Schlafmuseum Freiberg
Private museum on the cultural history of beds and sleep in the premises of a bedding store in Freiberg, free admission.
About the museum
The Betten- und Schlafmuseum (Bed and Sleep Museum) opened in November 2012 in the premises of the Freiberg specialty store Betten Uhlmann. The family business goes back to Emil Uhlmann, who began trading in bedding in 1910. The idea behind the museum: to publicly display objects from several centuries collected over decades and to vividly pass on knowledge about the development of sleeping.
On about 600 square meters, more than a hundred exhibits and numerous information panels document how people have slept in different eras, regions, and cultures. On view are, among other things, historic bed warmers, types of beds from various countries, and filling materials such as wool, feathers, and down.
Besides history, the exhibition also covers the production of bedding and mattresses, the history of nightwear, and medical questions about sleep disorders and sleep hygiene. At a microscope station, visitors can examine filling materials themselves. In 2015 the building, designed with few barriers, was recognized by the Saxon Ministry of Social Affairs as a "Lieblingsplatz für alle" (favorite place for everyone).
