About the museum

According to the university, the Mineralogical Collection of the Bergakademie Freiberg is among the oldest, largest and most beautiful of its kind in the world, and belongs to the ten oldest and most extensive collections in geology and mining science. In August 2024 it was named one of the first eleven IUGS Geo-Collections.

Well-known names are associated with it, such as Carl Friedrich Christian Mohs and Friedrich Ludwig Wilhelm Kolbeck, who were each responsible for administering, expanding and completing the holdings. After the Bergakademie reopened in 1946, Friedrich Leutwein headed the collection, and from 1958 Hans Jürgen Rösler; they built up an international exchange network to supplement the holdings even in financially difficult times.

Significant historical holdings include the originals of the mineral discoveries of Werner, Breithaupt and Weisbach, the Rittersgrün meteorite and the estate of Abraham Gottlob Werner. More recent focal points are a proustite collection from Schlema, silver specimens from Pöhla, bismuth crystal specimens from Schlema and whewellite crystals from Freital, Schlema and Ronneburg. The exhibition is located in the Abraham-Gottlob-Werner-Bau.
