About the museum

The Brandenburgisches Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst (Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art) was created in 2017 through the merger of two institutions. In Cottbus, a district gallery of art had been founded in 1977; it was elevated to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Cottbus in 1984, came under the care of the state of Brandenburg in 1991 and was incorporated into the Brandenburgische Kulturstiftung Cottbus in 2004. In Frankfurt (Oder), the Galerie Junge Kunst, later the Museum Junge Kunst, had existed since 1965 and focused especially on artistic ties with Poland.

Since 2008 the museum in Cottbus has held its exhibitions in the former diesel power station on the Amtsteich pond. The Berlin architect Werner Issel built the complex in 1927/28: an engine house with features of New Objectivity and a switch house in the Brick Expressionist style. After about three decades of operation, the power station stood empty and decayed for a long time until the firm Anderhalten Architekten converted it into an art museum over four years of construction.

Since the merger, the museum has been run by the Brandenburgische Kulturstiftung Cottbus-Frankfurt (Oder), funded by the state and the two cities. In Frankfurt (Oder), the BLMK uses the medieval town hall hall where the Galerie Junge Kunst was founded, and the Packhof on the Oder promenade, the city's last half-timbered building without plaster.

The collection comprises more than 45,000 works of painting, prints and drawings, photography, poster art and sculpture and is considered the most extensive museum holding of art from the GDR. It also includes art of the interwar period and contemporary positions, shown in up to 24 temporary exhibitions a year.
