About the museum
The museum occupies the living rooms where Bertolt Brecht and his wife, the actress and theater director Helene Weigel, spent the last years of their lives. In October 1953 Brecht moved into the apartment on the second floor of the side wing and rear building, where he lived until his death on August 14, 1956. He had chosen it for its proximity to the Berliner Ensemble, the Akademie der Künste and the neighboring historic cemeteries. The spacious rooms offered space for many work tables and for conversations with his students.
During Brecht's lifetime, Helene Weigel lived on the third floor. After his death she made these rooms available to the Bertolt-Brecht-Archiv, which she had founded. She had a veranda added facing the garden, moved to the first floor in 1957 and remained there until her death on May 6, 1971. The museum opened on February 10, 1978, Brecht's 80th birthday.
Three rooms of each apartment are preserved in their original condition. Brecht's apartment includes his estate library of about 4,000 volumes, which is available to users of the Bertolt-Brecht-Archiv. The Brecht House also houses the Bertolt-Brecht-Archiv with the Helene-Weigel-Archiv, as well as the Literaturforum.
