Portrait of the Augsburg publisher Hein Kohn, who fled to the Netherlands in 1933, set up exile publishing houses there and after 1945 founded an influential literary agency. On show are objects from Augsburg and the Netherlands, including some relating to Brecht.
About the museum
Bertolt Brecht was born on February 10, 1898, on the second floor of the narrow craftsman's house at Auf dem Rain 7. The house stands between two Lech canals, which now belong to the UNESCO World Heritage site "Augsburger Wassermanagement-System" (Augsburg water management system). The family stayed only briefly: a file-making workshop operated on the first floor, and its noise prompted them to move in September 1898 to a house only a few steps away. In 1900 they moved to Bleichstraße 2, where Brecht spent his youth.
Since 1985 the birthplace has been a memorial. The exhibition uses installations and objects to show Brecht's childhood and youth, his life and his work. On view are, among other things, first editions, a stage set from 1949, a life mask and a death mask, a cast of his hands, and his mother's original bedroom.
On the first floor a video installation with documentary films provides information, and the reading lounge invites visitors to browse Brecht editions. A video guide with contributions from Brecht experts leads through the rooms; the audio contributions can also be accessed on your own phone. The house is run by Regio Augsburg Tourismus GmbH.
