Lutherstiege bei St. Anna

About the museum

St. Anna’s Church in Augsburg was built in 1321 by the Carmelites. Martin Luther lived in the Carmelite monastery after arriving in the imperial city on October 7, 1518, following a twelve-day march on foot, to face questioning by the papal legate Cardinal Cajetan. Prior Johannes Frosch, whom Luther knew from Wittenberg, stood by him as an ally.

The Lutherstiege museum presents the history of the Reformation with a focus on Augsburg. The tour leads through historic rooms past multimedia-staged stations with original objects: a timeline on the staircase leads back into the late Middle Ages; further stations cover Luther’s arrival, the trading metropolis of Augsburg around 1518, the sale of indulgences, the interrogation, what it means to be Evangelical, and the role of printers, artists and new media.

Special pieces include a large picture book that the Salzburg exiles gave to the congregation as a token of thanks, and a diorama with 30 specially made rod puppets, which act out scenes such as the debate between Luther and Cajetan.
