Retrospective of the Berlin all-round artist Cesar Klein, with painting, interior design, mosaic, glass, porcelain, and stage design, including a reconstructed stage set.
The museum goes back to the Berlin entrepreneur and collector Karl H. Bröhan, who from the 1960s assembled art and applied arts from the period around 1900, at a time when this era was still largely overlooked. He later expanded his collection to include design from the 1920s and 1930s as well as paintings by the Berlin Secession.
In 1973 Bröhan opened his collection to the public in a villa in Dahlem. On his 60th birthday he donated it to the State of Berlin. On October 14, 1983, the museum moved into a late Neoclassical former barracks building that is part of the Schloss Charlottenburg ensemble; it has been a Landesmuseum (state museum) since 1994. Bröhan directed the museum until his death in 2000 and continued to expand the holdings.
The collection is divided into three areas: international Art Nouveau with furniture, porcelain, glass, and metalwork; French and German Art Deco through to the Functionalism of the Werkbund; and paintings and graphic works of the Berlin Secession. Across some 1,000 square meters, the museum shows changing collection displays and special exhibitions that also include design up to the present day.
A general renovation is scheduled to begin in spring 2027, modernizing the listed building and making it accessible.
