Museum Berggruen
Museum of classical modernism opposite Charlottenburg Palace with Picasso, Klee, Matisse and Giacometti – currently closed for renovation.
About the museum
The core is the collection of the art dealer and collector Heinz Berggruen, who had emigrated from Berlin in 1936 and, after decades in the US and Paris, returned to the city of his birth. In 1995 he initially lent his works to the Staatliche Museen (State Museums); in September 1996 the museum opened in the western Stüler Building opposite Charlottenburg Palace. In 2000 the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz acquired the collection for the Nationalgalerie with federal and state funds, at a price far below its market value.
The building is one of a pair of Neoclassical barracks that Friedrich August Stüler designed in the 1850s for the Garde du Corps; after the war it was restored as an exhibition building. By 2013 the architects Kuehn Malvezzi had expanded the museum to include the neighboring Kommandantenhaus (commandant's house), a glazed connecting passage and a sculpture garden.
The focal points are Pablo Picasso, with works from all phases of his career, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti, complemented by works by Cézanne and Braque. The Stüler Building has been closed for a comprehensive renovation since September 2022; in the meantime the collection is on an international exhibition tour taking it to Japan, China, Venice, Paris, Canberra, Madrid and Miami, among other places.
