About the museum
The Buchdruck-Museum (letterpress museum) in a backyard on Limmerstraße in Hannover-Linden is run by the association Freundeskreis Schwarze Kunst. Since the 2000s, volunteer members have preserved the working methods of classical relief printing here and passed their knowledge on to younger generations.
The museum does not see itself as a display collection behind barriers: all machines are ready for operation, and the motto is "preservation through production". Under guidance, visitors can set lead type in a composing stick, justify the lines and produce small printed items of their own. In doing so they also learn the specialist vocabulary of typesetters, printers and bookbinders, which has developed over centuries. An online tour on the website traces the individual steps from typesetting to printing.
