About the museum
The building on the Trarbach bank of the Moselle was constructed in 1906/07 to plans by the Berlin Art Nouveau architect Bruno Möhring as the Julius Kayser wine cellar – an elongated rubble-stone building with tower-like loggias, regarded as the only Art Nouveau wine cellar. Möhring also designed the Moselle bridge in Trarbach, whose bridge gate has been preserved.
In 2000, the entrepreneur and Buddhist Wolfgang Preuß, originally from Mainz, acquired the cellar. Later production extensions were demolished, the historic building was restored with natural stone and supplemented by a new building with a tall glass front. The Buddha Museum opened here in December 2009. On around 4,000 square metres including the inner courtyard and roof garden with a view over the Moselle, it shows Preuß's collection, built up over about two decades.
On display are around 2,000 figures of Buddhas, bodhisattvas and arhats from countries such as Myanmar, China, India, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, from many eras and in many materials. Media installations explain Buddhism as a teaching, philosophy and art; the largest figure is almost four metres tall. A café, a shop and guided tours at weekends round off the visit.
